the way beneath our feet

The spiritual journey of Daoism is persistent lessening. Initially, inspired by the great promises of Dao and enlightenment, we reach our hands upward, our gaze is fixed on the horizon, our attention grasps for something of great depth very far from where we are. However, whether by gradual progress or moments of leaping insight, we eventually come to see that everything promised has been with us all along. The feeling of the ground as it presses against the feet that we put one in front of the other, the breeze through our fingertips, the sun on the back of our neck, the sponge as we swirl it about a plate, the cadence of our sweeping broom, the smile of a good friend. The greatest blessings of mankind are always within our reach.

walk the dog

leave a comment »

We treat our dogs better than we treat ourselves. When our dogs are anxious and restless, we walk them. We take them out of their confines to take in the goodness of the world and to shake off any pent-up negativity. However, when we ourselves are anxious, we consume ourselves in gaudy distractions like television, we numb ourselves with alcohol, we may even medicate ourselves with drugs both illegal and pharmacological. This is part of why having a family dog can be so beneficial. We act for the sake of them, but we also. For the rest of us who do not or can not have a dog friend, we should take away the simple lesson: Walk.

tin foil hat

I’ve always been outspoken about the ways in which America is corrupt—money in politics, revolving door relationships, regulatory capture. For some reason, I’ve always assumed that America is as corrupt as even China, but in insidious instead of overt ways. After posting a Reddit /r/ChangeMyView on the topic, it seems it is more realistic to say that America has its problems, but is far from being “incredibly” corrupt. It is much less corrupt than China. As my mother and Dr. Kopah (who lived a year in Russia) have expressed again and again, America is pretty damn good and I am blessed as hell to live here.

that part

There is a weak nature in myself that I struggle with. He is intolerant, quick to anger, petty, and insecure. May I vigilantly and patiently restrain him. In time, may I whittle him down.

Why Psychiatry?

Because… I like getting to know people and because I want people to get the most out of the only life they have.

psychology of groups, travel, and world view

leave a comment »

I read a great section in the book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, that talked about how exposing different groups of people to each other does not guarantee that they will like each other. As it turns out, the conditions of the interaction are greatly important. In conditions of competition–such as the traditional classroom where students try to show their knowledge or avoid appearing stupid in front of their peers, ethnic groups can grow apart and resentful of one another. However, there was a study done with students in summer camps where two groups of students lived in different cabins developed rivalries. These rivalries were subsequently overcome by cooperative situations–where they had to work together to mutual benefit.

I realized a correlate to my experiences abroad. I am lucky in that medical school electives are work-driven (as opposed to pleasure-driven) and this gave me the opportunity to work with the local people. Working side-by-side, I became familiar with them not as providers of service (as is more typical in tourism) but as equals striving for a common goal (patient care).
