In no area of life can one reach an accomplishment and be finished and content forever after.  This is because achievement is only a superficial side-effect of practice.

In reminiscence, we do not cherish the days of recognition (graduations, et cetera).  We cherish the days of doing—the sweat beading, the people accompanying, and the hours focused.

The picture of health is in our regular habits.  The mark of productivity is in our daily diligence.  The beauty of life is in its practice.

alcohol is annoying

Drinking is a productivity drain at so many levels.  There is the night of—if it is to be a great night, then I will certainly be sleeping later than I plan to.  There is the morning-afternoon after—headaches and anxiety*.  There is the night after—residual demotivation.

*Alcohol is a depressant.  To counter the effects of a depressant compound, your body’s neurons heighten their stimulatory tendencies.  In alcoholics, this is the basis for the jitters and even life-threatening seizures (delirium tremens) of alcohol withdrawal.  In the rest of us, this can exacerbate any anxiety we would already be susceptible to after a night full of hilarious shenanigans.

We learn the most at a moderate level of stress.  It is proven.  In the past year, I have un-done a lot of my calming practices because of this fact.  I have allowed myself a persistent state of moderate stress and concern (regarding my studies) to enable my optimal learning state.  However, I think I can do better than this.

In the above sense, stress is only a tool and, as such, I need not carry it with me to bed.  It will be good cognitive gymnastics:  To allow myself to fret and worry during the day so that I maintain my motivation to study superhuman hours—then to remove my self come night so that I may better relax and appreciate my day’s accomplishments.

Look at your hand.  Open it.  Close it.  Hold it as a fist.  Notice the the pressure of your four fingers on your palm.  Notice the touch laid across your fingers that is your thumb.  Look at your body.  Look at your arms.  Poke them.  Poke your arms repeatedly.  Notice the sensation of touch.

Consciousness is no small matter.  Self-awareness, sentience, consciousness is a universal concept.  In all the universe, stars, planets, and organisms take on different forms.  But consciousness will be the same no matter what lightyear-marker you are at.  To be able to not only feel and do, but to think and be.  Consciousness is universal.  We could have been anything.  We could have been dolphins (also highly self-aware).  We could have been Octopi-like things.  We could have been swirling masses of energy that somehow came to know themselves.  We could have been anything.  But we’re not.

Poke the skin on your stomach.  We are human.  We are here.  We are actually here.  We are conscious and we are divine—so much more so than most of us appreciate.

We are a way for the cosmos to know itself. ~Carl Sagan

Most people in the class are beginning to study for the board exams now.  I need to work harder still then.

Disciplined.  Solemn.  Relentless.

It has been a wonderful month-and-a-half of break.  I now solemnly return to my regularly scheduled programming.
